Biography
Born in 1848, Charles E. Vernon stepped onto the stage when footlights still flickered with gas and audiences hushed at the rustle of a program. He shaped early cinema from both sides of the camera: marshaling crowds of extras for Cecil B. DeMille’s 1914 epic The Sign of the Cross, coaxing tenderness out of every frame of Hulda from Holland two years later, and compressing Shakespeare’s entire human comedy into the one-reel poem The Seven Ages of Man. The curtain rang down for the last time on 19 March 1926 in Boston, Massachusetts, bringing a quiet close to a life spent guiding stories from boards to celluloid.
