Biography
Budapest, 1865: the city lights up with the birth of Charles Kraus, a boy who would trade the Danube for Broadway. By 1914 he had stepped before the camera as the amiable rogue in One of Our Girls, and the next year he doubled his screen footprint with the espionage whirlwind An Affair of Three Nations and the domestic romp The Seven Sisters. Off-screen, he claimed the heart of fellow performer Camille Dalberg, and the pair carried their shared spotlight across continents. Kraus’s final curtain fell on 12 July 1931 in Manhattan, but the flicker of his early-century performances still dances in the archives of American film.
