Biography
Born in the sultry hill-station of Velore on 30 May 1866, Charles Rock crossed the seas from the East Indies to the London stage and, before long, to the flickering new world of cinema. Audiences remember his brisk authority in *The Firm of Girdlestone* (1915), the comic body-swap sparkle of *Vice Versa* (1916), and the breezy optimism of *Carry On* (1919). Off-screen, he shared his life—and applause—with actress Constance Helen Wilkie Jones, known to playgoers as Miss Cybel Wynne. Rock’s final curtain fell in London on 12 July 1919, barely two months after his last film lit the silver screen.
