Biography

Charlotte Burton first drew breath on 30 May 1881 amid San Francisco’s fog-crowned hills. Within a decade she had slipped onto flickering screens, shaping early cinema as the conflicted heroine of *Her Younger Sister* (1914), the steely romantic lead in *Man’s Desire* (1919), and the resilient title waif of *Polly of the Storm Country* (1920). Off-camera, three husbands—silent-star William Russell, mining engineer Weston Birch Wooldridge, and actor Darrell Stuart—shared chapters of her life. On 28 March 1942 she closed her final scene in Los Angeles, leaving behind a reel of performances that still whisper through the history of film.
