Biography
Born beneath Buffalo’s flickering gas-lamps on 2 June 1877, John Big Tree—whose name carried the weight of Seneca history—stepped from reservation soil into the glow of klieg lights. Between silents and talkies he bridged centuries: he let fly a flint-tipped arrow in 1921’s The Avenging Arrow, traded dust with wagon trains for 1926’s The Desert’s Toll, and in 1949 sat a painted war pony beside John Wayne in the ochre canyons of She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. When the cameras dimmed he returned to the Onondaga heartland, dying there on 6 July 1967, his footprints forever looped on celluloid prairie.
