Biography
On a winter day in 1887, the adobe rooftops of San Ildefonso, New Mexico, welcomed a future face of the silent screen: Chris Willow Bird. Twenty-eight years later, audiences first felt his glare across the monochrome vistas of *The White Scar* (1915). Talkies had come and gone by the time he resurfaced, grizzled but magnetic, in *Where the North Begins* (1947). The curtain finally fell on 16 December 1968 in Los Angeles, closing a life that had spanned horse-drawn childhoods to freeway sunsets.
