Biography
Before the world learned to talk in talkies, Claire Hillier had already whispered herself into cinema’s infancy. In 1914 she stepped before the camera for *Puss in the Well*, a one-reel fable that few saw but history still remembers. A year later, while Europe’s guns echoed off distant trenches, she appeared twice more on flickering screens: first as the voice of toil in *The Song of the Wage Slave*, then opposite an other-worldly visitor in *The Alien*. By 1916 the flicker had dimmed, yet those three surviving shadows keep her forever moving in the corner of the frame.
