Clarence Merrick stepped in front of the camera just as silent film was finding its voice: he gambled everything as the smitten suitor in The Pawn of Fortune (1914), then cashed in his chips again two years later for The Lottery Man (1916), leaving audiences with two fleeting frames of his brief, bright moment on the early screen.
