Biography

San Francisco claimed Clay M. Greene twice—first on 12 March 1850, when he arrived as a newborn, and again on 5 September 1933, when the curtain fell for good. Between those dates he spun stories that leapt from the page to the flickering screen: Belle of Barnegat ushered audiences through the pines of 1915, while 1916 delivered the double punch of Millionaire Billie and Her Wayward Sister, all three bearing his signature as writer-director. Off-set, two women shared the marquee of his life—Laura Hewett Robinson and, later, Alice Randolph Wheeler—each marriage a fresh act in a tale that began and ended on the same fog-kissed bay.
