Biography
Born in Toronto, Canada, in 1885, Clifford Bruce emerged as a formidable presence in early American silent cinema. His well-built physique made him a natural fit for supporting roles across numerous dramas, westerns, and action-serials. His career took off with the Selig Film Company in 1913, followed by engagements with Fox studios and the Metro Film Company throughout the late 1910s. Bruce is perhaps most vividly remembered for two distinct performances: his turn as the enigmatic Gypsy Leader in Pearl White's thrilling action-adventure serial, 'The Perils of Pauline,' for the Pathe Film Company in 1914, and his portrayal of Tom the Friend in Theda Bara's iconic 1915 film, 'A Fool There Was,' directed by Porter Emerson Browne at the Fox Film Company. Tragically, his life was cut short; Clifford Bruce died in New York in 1919 at the tender age of 34. His final cinematic appearance, as Baron Demetrius Strakosch in 'Black Is White,' was released posthumously in 1920, a year after his untimely passing.
