Biography
A Manhattan summer—24 August 1883—delivered Clinton Preston to the world inside the restless hum of New York City. While Broadway’s marquees still glowed with gaslight, he stepped before the camera during cinema’s infancy, lending a dignified presence to three surviving one-reelers: the colonial swashbuckler *The Seats of the Mighty* (1914), the domestic drama *The Family Cupboard* (1915), and the light-hearted *Judy Forgot* that same year. Each appearance was brief, yet the flicker of his performances preserved a silhouette of early American film. The city that launched him ultimately called him back; he died there on 22 November 1927, aged forty-four, leaving only those fleeting frames to speak for him.
