Biography
A spring day in 1885 Bucharest welcomed Constantin Neamtu-Ottonel, the boy who would grow into one of Romania’s pioneering screen presences. After mastering brush and stage at the Academy of Arts—diploma in hand, 1910—he stepped straight into the flickering light of the new century. One year later, cameras rolled on *Amor fatal*, giving the 26-year-old his first celluloid close-up and the country one of its earliest native film faces. War and shifting borders could not dim his momentum: in 1914 he strode through the medieval ramparts of *Cetatea Neamtului*, and four decades later he still commanded the lens, guiding young viewers through the partisan adventures of *Brigada lui Ionut* in 1954.
