Biography
London welcomed Daisy Belmore on 30 June 1874, and the footlights soon claimed her. Between 1917 and 1930 she slipped into the skins of princesses, lovers and ingénues, bewitching early moviegoers in The Seven Swans, Bab’s Matinee Idol, and—thirteen years later—the wartime romance Seven Days Leave. Off-screen she shared her life with Samuel Waxman, an importer whose world of goods must have seemed tame beside her world of make-believe. The final curtain fell on 12 December 1954 in New York City, but the flicker of her performances keeps dancing.
