Biography
A brisk New-England winter welcomed Daniel Gilfether on 17 January 1849, and the bright lights of the stage soon beckoned him away from Boston’s cobblestoned streets. By 1915 he had stepped before the camera, beguiling audiences as the silver-tongued rogue in *The Love Liar*, and over the next two years he slipped into the skin of both a tormented father in *Brand’s Daughter* and a scheming aristocrat in *Zollenstein*. His final curtain fell on 3 May 1919, when the Pacific breezes of Long Beach, California, carried him off the mortal stage at age seventy.
