Biography
Daniel Makarenko entered the world in 1879, spent the next seventy-eight years shuttling between greasepaint and megaphone, and left it quietly on 6 March 1957 in a Philadelphia hospital ward. Along the way he steered the first screen version of Michael Strogoff in 1914, mined dramatic gold with The Silver Treasure twelve years later, and rounded out his career guiding Maurice Schwartz through the 1939 classic Tevya.
