Before Hollywood’s glare hardened into formula, a Kansas City daughter slipped onto flickering screens as the girl in the checkered dress, anchoring 1912’s The Girl in the Gingham Gown. Two years later she stepped into far darker territory, playing a soul trapped inside The House of Bondage, a 1914 melodrama now whispered about only in archivists’ hushed stacks. The cameras stopped rolling, but Della Buckridge’s brief silhouette—framed first by gingham, then by shadow—still flickers in those two surviving reels.
