Biography
Eleven days into 1880, while Manhattan’s elevated trains still rattled overhead, D.H. Turner drew his first breath in New York City. Within two decades he had swapped the city’s clamor for the flicker of nickelodeons, stepping before—and soon behind—the camera. Between 1916 and 1923 he guided three now-cult titles through the silent era’s flickering dusk: Her American Prince, a trans-Atlantic romance; Revelation, a moral melodrama; and The Cricket on the Hearth, Dickens reimagined in light and shadow. Forty summers after his debut, Turner’s final curtain fell on 18 August 1947, this time against the steady Pacific hush of Santa Monica, California.
