Biography
Los Angeles blinked awake on 8 August 1907 and delivered Doris Baker into a city still inventing itself. By age eight she’d stepped before the camera for *Kilmeny*, trading playground games for klieg lights, and by ten she was front and center in *Glory*, a Civil-War melodrama that let her steal scenes in petticoats. At nineteen she slipped into flapper shoes for *Ella Cinders*, lampooning fairy-tale innocence with a wink that silent-era audiences loved. After the talkies arrived she folded her career like a silk scarf, retreating from the spotlight she’d never chased. Ninety-one quiet circles of the sun later, she closed her eyes for good on 5 December 1998 in Carmichael, California, leaving behind three surviving reels and a century of California memories.
