Biography

Doris Farrington first drew breath on 14 October 1904 amid the electric chaos of New York City. By the age of ten she had slipped in front of the camera, a natural in the flickering new world of silent pictures; three years later she was already slicing and splicing stories together in the cutting room, a rare double-threat in an era that rarely let women do either. Audiences remember her face in Right Off the Bat (1915), her shadowy presence in The Tell-Tale Scar (1914), and her editorial hand steadying the intrigue of The Notorious Lady (1927). Off-screen she shared her life with fellow storyteller James O'Neill Taylor. Her own final scene rolled quietly on 30 August 1987 in Culver City, California, closing a life that had helped invent the grammar of American film from both sides of the lens.
