Biography
On a winter day in 1893, Manchester welcomed Doris Lytton into the world. By twenty-one she had stepped before the camera, breathing life into the 1914 fantasy *The Brass Bottle*. War-era audiences later found her in 1919’s *The Single Man*, and silent-film fans of 1925 watched her weather a storm in *Mutiny*. Off-screen she shared her life with composer-conductor Geoffrey Toye. Sixty years after her first cry in Manchester, London’s December air closed the curtain on her story, 2 December 1953.
