Biography
Philadelphia welcomed Duke Worne on a winter’s day, 14 December 1888, and from that first breath he seemed destined to chase adventure. By the mid-1920s he was coaxing thrills out of silent film: he sent Scotty of the Scouts (1926) sprinting through the woods, let The Silent Hero (1927) speak volumes without a word, and kept Smiling Billy (1927) grinning through every scrape. Between takes he stepped in front of the camera himself, trading the director’s megaphone for greasepaint when the story demanded. Off-screen, two women shared his spotlight—Virginia Brown Faire first, then Cecilia Elisa Hansen. The final curtain fell in Los Angeles on 13 October 1933, but the flickering images he crafted still gallop across the screen, forever young and forever silent.
