Biography

London, 1881: the curtain rose on Duncan McRae, a restless force who swapped the gas-lit stages of the capital for the flicker of early film. Within a decade he was shaping stories both in front of and behind the camera—steering My Own United States (1918) through wartime emotions, exposing greed in Money (1921), and wrestling power struggles in The Usurper (1919). Off-screen he found a lifelong co-star in actress Gertrude McCoy. The final fade-out came in his native city on 4 February 1931, closing the frame on a life lived between footlights and film reels.
