Biography
On a winter’s day in 1896, Edith Thornton drew her first breath amid the clang of Manhattan’s elevated trains. By twenty she had stepped before a camera, scolding wayward daughters in the 1916 cautionary tale *It May Be Your Daughter*. Eight years later she hurled herself down a flight of stairs in the cliff-hanger serial *The Fatal Plunge*, and in 1926 she sparked comic chaos as the pint-sized spitfire of *The Little Firebrand*. Between takes she swapped vows with action-leading-man Charles Hutchison. Eighty-eight springs after her New York beginning, she closed her eyes for the final time in Glendale, California, leaving behind flickering images that still jump off the silent screen.
