Biography

A shoemaker’s son from Hamilton, December 12, 1882, Edmund Breon slipped the moorings of small-town Scotland and sailed into the footlights. By the 1940s he had become Hollywood’s quietly indispensable gentleman-villain: the urbane scalp-hunter in Gaslight (1944), the smiling menace opposite Basil Rathbone in Dressed to Kill (1946), and the suave tempter of The Woman in the Window (1944). When the final curtain fell he was on Irish soil, in Cork, 24 June 1953.
