Biography
A Manhattan summer thundered to life on 21 August 1874, the day Edmund Mortimer first opened his eyes on the sidewalks of New York City. From those streets he would leap onto the stage, then slip behind the camera, guiding silents like The Broad Road, The Exiles and The Arizona Romeo through the flickering dawn of cinema. Somewhere between calls of “Action!” and “Cut!” he won the heart of actress Louise Bates, sealing the partnership with vows. His final curtain fell on 21 May 1944, far west of his birthplace, in sun-washed Los Angeles, California.
