Biography
Johnson City, New York, greeted the arrival of Edna Hammel on 9 April 1901, and before she had barely learned to walk she stepped straight into the glow of the early movie camera. At eleven she was already lighting up the silent screen, first as the mischief-maker in 1912’s *What Katie Did*, then thawing holiday hearts that same year in *A Christmas Accident*. Three seasons later she reappeared as the beguiling lead of 1915’s *The Fairy and the Waif*, sealing her place among cinema’s first child stars. When the final curtain fell, she had slipped away to Southwick, Massachusetts, where she died on 17 May 1964.
