Biography
Budapest, 8 December 1876: Eduard Rothauser enters the world of the Habsburg twilight and grows into the kind of performer who can both command the stage and call the shots from behind the camera. By 1919 he has the industry whispering about *Die Eidechse*; a year later he startles post-war audiences with the audacious *Er selbst sein Gott*; and in 1926 he unveils the raw human mosaic *Menschen untereinander*. Actor, director, perpetual émigré, he finally settles under the Catalan sun, dying quietly in Barcelona on 24 January 1956, leaving behind a trio of silent-era lightning bolts that still flicker across screens.
