Biography
Born beneath the St. Lawrence breeze of Ogdensburg, New York, on 2 May 1886, Edward Alexander grew up to trade small-town quiet for the flicker of nickelodeon lights. By 1913 he had stepped before the hand-cranked cameras, embodying Defoe’s castaway in Robinson Crusoe and, that same year, racing the clock in the suspenseful one-reeler While the Children Slept. Four years later he re-imagined biblical camaraderie as both performer and scenarist on The Chosen Prince, or the Friendship of David and Jonathan. Though the silver of his screen has long since faded to sepia, Alexander’s story ran on—closing its final reel in Dearborn, Michigan, on 15 August 1964.
