Biography

A midnight baby of 1879, Edward Dillon first drew breath amid the electric chaos of New York City. Within three decades he had swapped the clang of trolley cars for the hush of arc lights, slipping effortlessly between clowning in front of the camera and calling the shots behind it. Audiences laughed at his frantic patrolman in Help! Help! Police! (1919), gasped at the gambler’s fate in The Winning Stroke the same year, and later tipped their hats to the high-stakes mystic at the heart of The Dice Woman (1926). Off-screen, Frances Dillon shared the spotlight as his wife. The final reel rolled on 11 July 1933, when the director-actor took his last bow under the Hollywood sun.
