Biography
Born under the gaslight of 1874, Edward Gillespie slipped into the fledgling flicker of cinema just as the art itself was learning to walk. Between 1914 and 1915 he confronted larcenous jewel thieves in *The Great Diamond Robbery* and faced the churning hopes of an immigrant in *The Alien*, sealing his place in the nickelodeon era’s frantic glow. Decades after his curtain call, the posthumous short *Breakfast* (2000) threaded his archival image back onto the screen, letting a new century greet the ghost of his craft. Gillespie’s own final scene arrived on 23 July 1918, the sidewalks of New York City carrying him off while the cameras he once faced kept rolling without him.
