Biography
St. Louis welcomed Edwin Arden on 13 February 1864, and by his early twenties he had swapped the Mississippi’s muddy banks for grease-paint and gaslight. Onstage he sharpened a commanding voice, then stepped behind the camera to marshal shadows: in 1914 he steered episodes of the cliff-hanger serial *The Exploits of Elaine*, and the next year he both helmed and starred in *The Eagle’s Nest* and *The Beloved Vagabond*, sending thrills through nickelodeon crowds. Off-screen, the woman who shared his life was actress Agnes Ann Keene. The curtain fell for good on 2 October 1918, when Arden’s final scene played out in Queens, New York.
