Biography
July 10, 1881, marked the first take in Edwin Frazee’s life—a brisk opening scene in a story that would soon loop through flickering nickelodeons. Three years after Charlie Chaplin first twirled his cane, Frazee stepped before the camera in *A Favorite Fool* (1915), schooling audiences in the fine art of pratfalls. He kept the momentum rolling with back-to-back 1918 releases: *Phoney Photos*, a romp that poked fun at the newborn craze for candid snapshots, and *Hickory Hiram*, a rustic romp that let him trade city sidewalks for hay-strewn hijinks. Silent frames never sounded so loud.
