Biography
Born under the wide Nordic skies on 16 May 1892, Elsie Cort traded Denmark’s chill for the klieg lights of early Hollywood. Within two whirlwind years she slipped into three very different skins: the cunning jewel thief of *The Diamond Nippers* (1914), the small-town heartbreaker of *The Gentleman from Indiana* (1915), and the modern woman ablaze in *Smouldering Fires* (1915). Off-screen she took the hand of director Edward J. Sargent, sharing a marriage that outlasted the silent era. Her final curtain fell in Los Angeles on 28 December 1963, closing a life that had flickered brightly across the birth of American cinema.
