Biography
Born in Stockholm’s old town on 25 May 1864, Emil Bergendorff stepped onto the silent screen when movies still whispered through piano chords and flickering gaslight. Audiences first noticed him in the 1913 melodrama *På livets ödesvägar*, later winced at his menace in 1916’s *Kiss of Death*, and finally bid him farewell in the 1919 courtroom twist *Hans nåds testamente*. Three months past his 56th birthday, on 2 April 1921, he died quietly in Solna, Sweden, leaving behind the shadows that had made him briefly immortal.
