Biography

Turin, 30 July 1879: the city’s clang of trams and cafés brewed the restless energy that Emilio Ghione would spend on-screen and behind the camera. First came Za-la-Mort (1915), the serial that glued audiences to their seats as they followed his enigmatic gentleman-thief through rooftop chases and moral tightropes. Two years later he swapped rooftops for criminal lairs, steering the twelve-chapter spectacle I topi grigi (1918) as both star and mastermind. By 1920 he had turned to haunted corridors, wrapping Il castello di bronzo in shadows that still flicker in silent-film archives. Actor, director, perpetual motion—Ghione’s career burned fast and bright, guttering out only on 7 January 1930 in Rome, far from the Piedmontese streets where it began.
