Biography
Balassagyarmat, 2 March 1889: a small Hungarian town greeted the arrival of Endre Kertész, who would grow into one of the silent screen’s earliest faces. Within a few short years he stepped before the camera, lending quiet intensity to Sárga csikó (1914), A peleskei nótárius (1916), and the caper Az egymillió fontos bankó (1917). Fame flickered fast in those days; Kertész’s light dimmed in Budapest on 28 January 1925, leaving the projectors still turning but one performer forever missing from the frame.
