Biography
Balham, 22 May 1882: a Victorian street-corner coughs up a boy who will trade his South-London accent for a crown of tinsel. By 1911 he is Richard of Gloucester, blade-drawn and velvet-cloaked in the earliest surviving film of Shakespeare’s crook-backed king. Four years later he slips into the gas-lit shadows of *After Dark*, a melodrama that flickers like a penny-match across Britain’s music-hall screens. Finsbury claims him back in 1963, the reel ended, the spotlight dimmed, but the nitrate still whispers his name: Eric Maxon.
