Biography

Ernst Eklund first drew breath on 6 August 1882 among the timber forests of Östervåla, Västmanland, and spent the next eighty-nine years turning that breath into commanding stage and screen performances. Audiences still shiver at his calculating Lord Savile in the 1922 thriller *Lord Saviles brott*, laugh at the comic chaos he orchestrated in 1945’s *Crazy Quartet*, and smile at the wily matchmaker he brought to life in 1943’s *Flickan är ett fynd*. Behind the camera he called the shots as surely as in front of it; off-set, he shared his life with actress Alice Eklund. His final curtain fell quietly on 3 August 1971 in Bromma, Stockholm, closing a career that had helped shape Swedish cinema from silents to talkies.
