Biography
A shadow-dancer from England’s late-Victorian twilight, Ethel Bracewell slipped onto the boards just before the 1890s exhaled its last gasp. By 1913 the camera had replaced the footlights: her dark curls and velvet gaze flickered across Zenith Film Company melodramas, each frame crackling with unspoken tension. A year later she was trading whispers for revolvers, headlining a clutch of crime chillers under the twin batons of Ethyle and Ernest Batley at B&C Film Company. Her final bow came in 1915 when, as Bessie Webster, she walked down a celluloid aisle in Leedham Bantock’s romantic crime swirl *The Beggar Girl’s Wedding*—a wedding that doubled as her own goodbye. The projector stopped, the reels were boxed, and Ethel vanished from every future frame.
