Biography
Portland, Oregon, welcomed Ethel Jewett on 8 September 1877, and by her late thirties she had traded the steady rain of the Pacific Northwest for the flicker of klieg lights. Between 1914 and 1916 she slipped into three vastly different skins: the tormented lead of Remorse, the glittering mystery of The Necklace of Pearls, and the heart-battered world of Silas Marner. When the cameras stopped, she stayed in California, dying quietly in Los Angeles on 8 December 1944.
