Biography
Brooklyn, 23 March 1886: Ethel Lloyd first drew breath within sight of the borough’s still-new steel bridges. Barely out of her teens, she stepped before the camera when movies were still measured in single reels, stealing scenes in the 1913 short Beauty Unadorned and sharpening her comic timing in A Florida Enchantment the following year. By 1916 she carried the feature-length drama The Ransom opposite a cast of rising stars, sealing a brief but indelible screen legacy. Off-screen, she shared her life—and surname—with fellow performer Lloyd Hamilton. Thirty-six years after her first Brooklyn sunrise, she closed her eyes there for the last time on 12 January 1923.
