Biography
Long before the talkies, Ethel Phillips stepped in front of the camera and let silence speak. In 1912 she answered the bushland call of Cooee and the Echo, then slipped into the bustle of Victorian drawing-room comedy for London Assurance the following year. By 1914 she was wielding a spear in Cecil B. DeMille’s biblical spectacle The Sign of the Cross, proving that even without words, her presence could thunder across the screen.
