Biography
Lynn, Massachusetts, greeted the world with Ethyle Cooke on 4 August 1880, and from that day forward the stage—and later the screen—had a quietly magnetic presence. She slipped into Shakespeare’s world as Jessica in the 1912 *Merchant of Venice*, conjured art-world romance in 1915’s *Inspiration*, and wrangled mischief opposite her real-life partner in 1917’s *Patsy*. Off-camera, her leading man remained Harry Benham, the actor who shared both her marquee and her heart. Sixty-eight springs after her first cry in Lynn, she drew her final breath in Waukesha, Wisconsin, on 20 April 1949.
