Biography
Odessa, March 20, 1890: a restless girl with a lightning-fast smile is born in the bustling port city. By 1914 she had crossed oceans and language barriers to light up the screen as the irrepressible heroine of One of Our Girls; two years later she dove head-first into Life’s Whirlpool and then prowled the shadowed streets of New York, gifting early cinema a face both mischievous and luminous. Off-camera she claimed the heart—and last name—of cultural provocateur Carl Van Vechten. The curtain finally fell on November 17, 1971, in Englewood, New Jersey, but the sparkle she left on celluloid still dances.
