Biography
Rio de Janeiro, 1895: the year Fausto Muniz first opened his eyes, the city was already rehearsing samba beats that would echo across the century. Behind a camera lens he found his true gaze, coaxing light and shadow to dance in Alô, Alô, Brasil (1935) and again in the hopeful frames of Eterna Esperança (1940). A natural showman, he stepped in front of the lens as well, channeling comic fire into Acabaram-se os Otários back in 1929. When the final reel of his life ran out in 1958, Brazil lost a visual poet who had helped teach the country how to see itself onscreen.
