Biography

A Parisian spring delivered Fernande Dépernay on 21 May 1868, and the city’s footlights soon claimed her. Between 1912 and 1921 she flickered across early screens—first as the tormented Minna Claessens, later in the whimsical Au ravissement des dames, and finally as the stoic face in Le portrait de l’amiral. Off-camera she shared her life with fellow performer Georges Mertens. Six decades after her film debut, on 14 August 1956, she took her final bow in Asnières-sur-Seine, the Seine still murmuring its applause nearby.
