Biography
Before the cameras rolled on the Pacific coast in 1914, Flat Iron’s name was already spoken in the lodges of the Lakota. That summer he rode straight out of the Standing Rock Reservation and into Edward Curtis’s The Indian Wars, a one-reel whirlwind of dust, feathers, and artillery smoke. No studio trickery could fake the weathered set of his eyes or the calm with which he sat his pony while explosions cracked across the California hills. When the last frame sputtered through the projector, the screen went dark; Flat Iron turned his horse north and vanished back into the grasslands, leaving history to remember him from a single flickering print.
