Biography

Flora Zabelle, born Flora Mangasarian, was a luminous presence on the Broadway stage and a trailblazer in the dawn of American silent cinema. Her path to stardom began in the wake of tragedy, as her family fled the Armenian Genocide massacres in Constantinople to seek refuge in the United States. A graduate of Wellesley College, Zabelle bypassed a traditional career path to pursue the theater, eventually marrying the celebrated actor Raymond Hitchcock. The pair became a staple of the silent screen, though today their cinematic legacy is only partially preserved, with several of their collaborations lost to time. Zabelle’s personal life was often as dramatic as her scripts. She endured a harrowing period when her husband, facing fabricated criminal charges, vanished for several days, leading her to believe he had been kidnapped or killed. Her resilience was tested again when her father was apprehended by Turkish authorities during a secret mission to Constantinople; in response, she leveraged her fame to lead a nationwide fundraising campaign that successfully secured his release. Following the death of her husband, Zabelle’s world grew smaller as she retreated into a reclusive lifestyle, eventually abandoning her acting career altogether. Even at the height of her renown, her influence extended into popular culture, where her image was famously featured on collectible Fatima cigarette cards.
