Biography
Springfield, Massachusetts, greeted Florence Short on 19 May 1889, and from that New England cradle she sprinted toward footlights and film reels. Within a decade she was gifting the silent screen a whirlwind charm: in 1919 she sparked laughter in Love, Honor and—?, the next year she steered hearts through The Love Flower, and in 1920 she braved blizzards beside Lillian Gish in the epoch-making Way Down East. Cameras stopped rolling, but Short kept pace with life until 10 July 1946, when Los Angeles, the city that had become her second home, closed her final scene.
