Biography
A Merseyside boy who stepped onto the stage just as flickers of celluloid began to dance, Francis Carlyle first drew breath on 27 August 1868 in Birkenhead’s salt-tinged air. Within a few crowded seasons he had slipped from theatre wings into the new whirl of moving pictures, surviving cliff-top crashes in *The Perils of Pauline* (1914), outwitting crooks in *Detective Craig’s Coup* (1914), and claiming an inheritance shrouded in menace for *Kenton’s Heir* (1913). The camera had barely finished rolling when, on 15 September 1916, he took his final bow in Hartford, Connecticut, leaving the bright, breathless era of early American serials one leading man short.
